Types and effects of dispersants

Posted on August 29, 2023 By admin No Comments on Types and effects of dispersants

Dispersants are a type of chemical substance used to disperse solid particles into liquids and prevent their re aggregation and deposition. They play an important role in various applications. The following are several common types of dispersants and their effects:

Surfactants: Surfactants are one of the most commonly used dispersants and are widely used in various industries. They have two interdependent parts: hydrophilic head groups and hydrophobic tail groups. The hydrophilic head group can interact with water molecules, while the hydrophobic tail group can interact with solid particles. Through this amphiphilic property, surfactants can disperse solid particles into liquids and form stable dispersion systems.

Polymer dispersant: A polymer dispersant is a polymer compound composed of a large number of units. They can interact physically or chemically with the surface of solid particles, thereby preventing aggregation and deposition between particles. Polymer dispersants stabilize particle dispersion systems through the extension and adsorption of chain segments.

Bonding agents: Bonding agents, also known as complexing agents, can stabilize and disperse in the liquid phase by complexing with metal ions or ion groups in solid particles. The complex formed by the binding agent can provide positive or negative charges, thereby preventing electrostatic forces and magnetic attraction between particles.

Colloidal stabilizer: Colloidal stabilizer can change the surface charge of particles, thereby preventing aggregation between particles. They provide stability by adsorbing to the surface of particles and changing their charge state.

Mechanical dispersants: Mechanical dispersants disperse solid particles into liquids through mechanical action. Common mechanical dispersants include ultrasonic treatment, high-pressure spray and shear force.

These dispersants can be applied in various fields such as coatings, dyes, inks, adhesives, cosmetics, pesticides, pigments, etc. Their role is to ensure the uniform dispersion, stability, and operability of particles, and to improve the quality and performance of products. In specific applications, it is crucial to choose the appropriate dispersant and use it according to the correct dosage and method.
