Metal Ions Interfering with Pulp Bleaching? DTPMPA Steps In to Keep Order

Posted on October 8, 2026 By admin No Comments on Metal Ions Interfering with Pulp Bleaching? DTPMPA Steps In to Keep Order
In the hydrogen-peroxide bleaching stage of papermaking, trace iron, copper, and manganese ions in the liquor catalyze the wasteful decomposition of peroxide — weakening both the bleaching effect and the fiber. Diethylene Triamine Penta (Methylene Phosphonic Acid) (DTPMPA) has extremely strong chelating power over a wide range of metal ions, locking up these “troublemakers” at very low concentration, thereby stabilizing the bleach liquor and protecting fiber strength. It’s the invisible contributor behind consistent quality in many paper mills.

Beyond papermaking, DTPMPA (Diethylene Triamine Penta Methylene Phosphonic Acid) is also heavily used in oilfield reinjection, industrial cleaning, and peroxide stabilization. It belongs to the same phosphorus-based chelating family as HEDP (Hydroxyethylidene Diphosphonic Acid), but DTPMPA has more coordination sites and a larger chelation capacity, making it more effective when dealing with systems of complex metal ions. When selecting, pay attention to active content and impurity control to get its stabilizing effect.
