HPMA Instructions

Posted on July 6, 2025July 6, 2025 By admin No Comments on HPMA Instructions

Application: Scale inhibition & dispersion in cooling water, boilers, RO systems, and oilfield operations.

1. Recommended Dosage

Application Dosage (mg/L) Key Target Scales
Cooling Water 5–20 CaCO₃, CaSO₄, Fe₂O₃
Boiler Water 10–30 Ca₃(PO₄)₂, MgSiO₃
Reverse Osmosis (RO) 2–10 CaCO₃, BaSO₄, silica
Oilfield Injection 10–50 BaSO₄, SrSO₄ (squeeze treatments)

Note:

  • Adjust dosage based on water hardness, pH, and system temperature.

  • For high scaling potential (e.g., LSI > 2.5), use upper dosage limits.

2. Dilution & Feeding

  • Dilution: Pre-dilute HPMA with deionized water (1:5 to 1:10 ratio) to avoid localized high concentrations.

  • Feed Point: Inject continuously into the feedwater line or circulation system.

  • Avoid Incompatible Chemicals: Do not mix with cationic polymers or high-dose oxidizers (e.g., >5 mg/L free chlorine).

3. Compatibility & Synergies

Compatible With Incompatible With Synergistic Blends
Phosphonates (ATMP/HEDP) Aluminum-based coagulants HPMA + PAA (enhanced dispersion)
Zinc-based inhibitors High-valent metal ions (Fe³⁺, Al³⁺) HPMA + PBTC (high-temperature scale control)

4. Monitoring & Control

  • Key Parameters:

    • pH: Optimal range 7.0–9.5.

    • Conductivity: Monitor to avoid over-concentration.

    • Residual HPMA: Maintain 2–5 mg/L in circulating water (test via phosphonate-specific assays).

  • Deposit Checks: Inspect heat exchangers quarterly for scale buildup.

5. Safety & Handling

  • Storage: Keep in HDPE containers at 5–40°C; avoid freezing.

  • Personal Protection: Wear gloves and goggles; rinse skin/eyes immediately if contacted.

  • Environmental Note: Low toxicity (LD50 > 5,000 mg/kg), but comply with local P discharge limits.

6. Troubleshooting

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Reduced inhibition Overdosed cationic polymers Flush system; adjust feed ratio
Cloudy water Precipitation with Fe³⁺/Al³⁺ Pre-treat with dispersants or reduce metal ions
Pump clogging Undiluted HPMA crystallization Dilute before feeding; clean filters

For Optimal Performance:

  • Conduct water analysis (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, SO₄²⁻, SiO₂) before dosing.

  • Pair with corrosion inhibitors (e.g., Zn²⁺, molybdate) for dual protection.

Contact Supplier for system-specific formulations if scaling is severe (e.g., >500 mg/L hardness as CaCO₃).
