Property:

Glutaraldehyde is colorless or yellowish clear and bright liquid with slight irritating smell, and can be dissolved in organic dissolvent such as water, ether and ethanol.

In water solution, the product doesn’t exist much in free state; instead,it makes appearance as hydrates with different forms.and most of them are hydrates with annular structure.

Glutaraldehyde is reactive in property, and liable to polymerize and oxidize, which will react with compounds containing active oxygen and nitrogen. The reaction of the product with protein is mainly carried out between the carbonyl group of the former and the amino group of the latter. Among the known aldehydes, the product is one of the best cross-linking agents for proteins.

The product has a small influence on the activity of enzyme, and most of enzymes can be fixed under controlled condition, to cross-link without losing their activity. Contrbuting to its outstanding characteristics, the product has drawn special concern from people and been put at broad application.

Protective measures:

Glutaraldehyde is a potent disinfectant and sterilizing agent commonly used in healthcare and laboratory settings. It can be hazardous if not handled properly, so it’s important to take appropriate protective measures when working with this chemical. Here are some general protective measures to follow:

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, goggles or face shield, and respiratory protection (if required), when handling glutaraldehyde. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for recommended PPE.
  2. Engineering Controls: Ensure proper ventilation in the working area to minimize exposure to glutaraldehyde vapors. Use local exhaust ventilation systems or work in well-ventilated areas.
  3. Storage and Handling: Store glutaraldehyde in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from heat, ignition sources, and incompatible materials. Follow proper storage procedures outlined by the manufacturer.
  4. Spill Management: In case of a spill, contain the area and prevent glutaraldehyde from entering drains, sewers, or water bodies.
  5. Handling Precautions: Avoid direct contact with glutaraldehyde. If contact occurs, immediately wash the affected area with soap and water.
  6. Training and Education: Provide adequate training to employees on safe handling, storage, and disposal of glutaraldehyde. Ensure they are aware of the potential hazards and know how to respond in case of an emergency.
  7. Follow Regulations: Comply with all applicable local, national, and international regulations regarding the use, transportation, and disposal of glutaraldehyde. Stay updated on any changes in regulations or safety guidelines.

It’s important to note that these measures are general guidelines and may vary depending on the specific application and concentration of glutaraldehyde being used.
