Characteristics of Phosphino-Carboxylic Acid (PCA)

Posted on November 5, 2026 By admin No Comments on Characteristics of Phosphino-Carboxylic Acid (PCA)

Phosphino-Carboxylic Acid (PCA), also commonly referred to as POCA or PPCA, is a multifunctional water treatment polymer characterized by its combined phosphonic and carboxylic acid groups. Its key characteristics are its broad-spectrum scale inhibition, excellent dispersancy, and h3 stability under harsh conditions.

Core Characteristics

Broad-Spectrum Scale Inhibition

PCA is effective against a variety of scales. It shows good dispersion performance for calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate scale in circulating cooling water systems . It also provides good inhibition against barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, and silica scale deposition .

Excellent Dispersancy

Beyond inhibiting scale, PCA acts as a dispersant. It is particularly effective at dispersing iron oxide, helping to keep particles suspended and prevent them from depositing on surfaces .

High Chemical & Thermal Stability

The molecule is known for its h3 chlorine tolerance, meaning it is not easily degraded by oxidizing biocides like chlorine . It also exhibits good thermal stability, with some commercial grades reported to be stable at temperatures up to 200°C . This allows it to function in systems with varying water qualities and under stressful conditions.

Wide Applicability & Synergy

It is effective across a wide range of water qualities, including those with high hardness, alkalinity, or pH . PCA also shows synergistic effects when combined with other water treatment agents like organic phosphonates, copolymers, zinc salts, or azoles (e.g., BTA) .

Typical Applications & Use

Primary Use: It is mainly used as a scale and corrosion inhibitor in industrial circulating cooling water systems and oilfield reinjection water systems .

Dosage: When used alone, the typical dosage is in the range of 5–20 mg/L .

Form: Commercial products are typically acidic aqueous solutions (pH around 2–5) with a solid content ranging from 30% to 50% .

In summary, PCA is valued for being a single product that can handle multiple scale types and dispersion tasks while remaining stable in aggressive chemical environments.
