Technical & Safety Instruction Manual: Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride (CTAC)
Chemical Name: Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride
CAS Number: 112-02-7
Molecular Formula: C}_{19}\text{H}_{42}\text{ClN}$
Ionic Nature: Cationic Surfactant
1. Product Overview & Functionality
Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride (CTAC) is a quaternary ammonium-based cationic surfactant. Due to its positively charged hydrophilic head and a long hydrophobic 16-carbon alkyl chain, it exhibits exceptional substantive properties on negatively charged surfaces (such as textile fibers, human hair, and microbial cell walls).
Core Industrial Functions
-
Antistatic Agent: Neutralizes static charges on synthetic and natural fibers.
-
Fiber & Fabric Softener: Aligns along textile surfaces to reduce friction, improving fabric hand and drape.
-
Emulsifier & Dispersant: Acts as a high-performance oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier for silicones and fatty alcohols.
-
Phase Transfer Catalyst: Facilitates reactions between immiscible aqueous and organic phases in organic synthesis.
-
Biocide/Sanitizer: Disrupts cell membranes of micro-organisms, acting as a topical antimicrobial agent.

3. Application Instructions & Dosage
A. Textile Auxiliaries & Finishing
CTAC is widely applied during the post-treatment and finishing stages of textile wet processing, particularly for acrylic, wool, and blended fabrics.
-
Method: Exhaustion or Padding method.
-
Recommended Dosage: * Exhaustion: 0.2% – 0.5% (o.w.f. – on weight of fabric), pH adjusted to 5.0 – 6.0, processed at 40℃ – 50℃ for $15 – 20$ minutes.
-
Padding: $2 – 5 \text{ g/L}$ in the finishing liquor pad bath.
-
-
Compatibility Warning: Do not mix CTAC directly with anionic surfactants, dyes, or auxiliaries (e.g., direct dyes, acid dyes, acrylic acid thickeners). Doing so will cause immediate precipitation, complexation, and complete loss of efficacy.
B. Cosmetic & Personal Care Formulations
Utilized as a conditioning agent and emulsifier in hair conditioners, hair masks, and styling products.
-
Recommended Dosage: 0.5% – 3.0% (active matter base).
-
Processing: Incorporate into the oil or water phase at 70℃ – 75℃ during the emulsification step when creating fatty alcohol matrices (e.g., Cetearyl Alcohol).
C. Industrial Emulsions & Water Treatment
Used for formulating silicone emulsions and as a minor biocide component in cooling towers.
-
Recommended Dosage: $1.0\% – 5.0\%$ based on total weight of silicone oil to be emulsified.
4. Handling, Safety & Storage Guidelines
Hazard Identification
-
Corrosivity: Concentrated CTAC (>25%) is corrosive. It causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
-
Aquatic Toxicity: Highly toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Avoid un-neutralized discharge into municipal waterways.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
⚠️ MANDATORY PPE REQUIREMENTS:
Eye Protection: Chemical splash goggles or a full-face shield.
Skin Protection: Nitrile or neoprene chemical-resistant gloves; long-sleeved lab coat or industrial apron.
Respiratory Protection: Use in a well-ventilated area. If mist or vapors are generated, utilize an organic vapor/particulate respirator.
Storage Conditions
-
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse ($5^\circ\text{C} – 35^\circ\text{C}$).
-
Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use.
-
Material Compatibility: Store in polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene, or lined steel containers. Avoid unlined carbon steel or copper alloys, as cationic surfactants can accelerate localized corrosion over extended periods.
-
Note on Temperature: High-concentration CTAC may crystallize or paste-out if exposed to temperatures below $15^\circ\text{C}$. If this occurs, gently heat the container to $40^\circ\text{C} – 50^\circ\text{C}$ and agitate thoroughly before use to restore homogeneity.
5. Emergency First Aid Measures
-
Inhalation: Move the exposed individual to fresh air. Seek medical attention if breathing is difficult.
-
Skin Contact: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing. Seek medical intervention for chemical burns.
-
Eye Contact: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Seek immediate ophthalmic medical care.
-
Ingestion: Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do not induce vomiting unless directed by medical personnel. Seek immediate medical attention.
6. Spill and Waste Disposal
-
Containment: Isolate the spill area. Dike large liquid spills using non-combustible absorbent materials (sand, earth, vermiculite).
-
Clean-Up: Scoop the absorbed material into designated chemical waste containers. Wash the spill site residual film with copious amounts of water, as CTAC residues can make floors exceptionally slippery.
-
Disposal: Dispose of waste and containers in accordance with local, state, and national environmental regulations. Avoid sending concentrated surfactant waste into biological wastewater treatment plants without a controlled, metered dilution phase, as it can shock active sludge microbes.
