  • Type: An anionic, low molecular weight copolymer.

  • Structure: Combines the strong chelating/dispersing power of maleic acid units with the excellent crystal distortion/scale inhibition power of acrylic acid units. This synergy gives it superior performance over homopolymers (like PAA) in many cases.

  • Primary Function: Scale inhibition and dispersion, particularly effective against:

    • Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) scale

    • Calcium phosphate (Ca₃(PO₄)₂) scale

    • Barium sulfate (BaSO₄) and Strontium sulfate (SrSO₄) scale (excellent for this).

    • It also disperses suspended particles like clay, silt, and iron oxides, preventing sludge deposition.

2. Key Application Notes (How to Use It Effectively)

  • Optimal pH Range: Performs well across a broad pH range, typically from pH 7.0 to 9.5, and remains stable even under higher alkaline conditions. This makes it suitable for many cooling water and boiler water programs.

  • Dosage: Effective at low, “threshold” dosages, usually in the range of 2-10 mg/L (ppm) as active polymer. The exact dose depends on water hardness, saturation levels, and system cycles of concentration.

  • Compatibility: Highly compatible with other water treatment chemicals, including:

    • Corrosion Inhibitors: Organic phosphonates (HEDP, ATMP), zinc salts, molybdates.

    • Other Polymers: Can be blended with other copolymers for enhanced performance.

    • Oxidizing Biocides: It has good chlorine/tolerance compared to some phosphonates, but long-term exposure to high chlorine levels can degrade it.

  • Temperature Stability: Has good thermal stability, generally effective in systems with temperatures up to 121°C (250°F) under normal pH conditions.

3. Safety & Handling Notes (Critical for Operators)

Despite its “green” profile compared to phosphonates, it is still an industrial chemical.

  • Physical Form: Typically supplied as a clear to light yellow viscous liquid (e.g., 40-50% active solution).

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear:

    • Safety goggles or face shield.

    • Chemical-resistant gloves (e.g., nitrile).

    • Protective clothing and boots.

  • First Aid:

    • Eyes: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

  • Regulations: It is generally well-accepted under major regulatory frameworks (e.g., EU REACH, US EPA). It is often a key component in “green” or “environmentally friendly” water treatment formulas.

5. Comparison with Other Polymers (To Avoid Confusion)

  • vs. PAA (Polyacrylic Acid): MA-AA·Na generally has better calcium phosphate scale inhibition and better tolerance to high hardness/high pH. It is also more biodegradable.

  • vs. HPMA (Hydrolyzed Polymaleic Anhydride): HPMA has higher thermal stability and is often better for very high-temperature applications, but MA-AA·Na can be more effective across a wider range of scales.

  • vs. Green Polymers (PASP/PESA): All are biodegradable. PASP/PESA are made from different monomers and may offer different performance profiles (e.g., PASP is excellent for barium sulfate). MA-AA·Na is often a cost-effective and high-performance “green” option.
