The working principle of GLDA-Na₄ is fundamentally based on its strong chelation (sequestration) of metal ions, particularly calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺), combined with selective adsorption onto specific mineral surfaces.
Chelation and Sequestration
GLDA-Na₄ is an aminopolycarboxylic acid salt. Its molecular structure contains multiple carboxylate groups that act as electron donors, forming stable, water-soluble ring structures (chelates) with polyvalent metal cations. By binding to hardness ions like Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ in solution, it effectively “locks” them away, preventing them from reacting with anions (like carbonate or sulfate) to form insoluble scale deposits. This property is the basis for its use as a scale inhibitor and builder in detergents.
Surface Adsorption and Selectivity
Beyond simple sequestration in solution, GLDA-Na₄ exhibits a notable selectivity for certain metal sites on solid surfaces. Research in mineral processing has demonstrated that GLDA preferentially adsorbs onto calcium (Ca) sites on the surface of minerals like calcite. It forms chemical bonds with these surface Ca atoms, creating a hydrophilic coating that prevents the adsorption of collectors (like soap or other surfactants) and thereby inhibits the mineral’s flotation. This selective adsorption principle is what allows it to act as a specific depressant in the separation of different minerals.
Practical Effects in Applications
These core principles translate into several practical functions:
Scale Inhibition: By keeping scale-forming ions in solution, GLDA-Na₄ prevents the nucleation and growth of mineral crystals that would otherwise foul membranes or form deposits on equipment surfaces.
Cleaning Enhancement: In detergents, it softens water by sequestering hardness ions, which improves the effectiveness of surfactants and prevents soap scum.
Mineral Processing: Its selective adsorption makes it useful as an environmentally friendly depressant to separate valuable minerals from gangue (e.g., separating magnesite from calcite).
GLDA-Na₄ works by “capturing” problematic metal ions in solution and, in some contexts, by selectively “coating” specific mineral surfaces to alter their behavior.
