Plant-Based Chelation for Heavy Metal Removal and Green Formulations

Posted on October 16, 2026 By admin No Comments on Plant-Based Chelation for Heavy Metal Removal and Green Formulations

GLDA (Glutamic Acid N,N-Diacetic Acid, Tetrasodium Salt) is a next-generation chelating agent derived from L-glutamic acid, a renewable, plant-based raw material. Unlike EDTA and NTA, which persist in the environment, GLDA.Na4 is readily biodegradable and environmentally friendly — making it the chelating agent of choice for formulators facing tightening environmental regulations.

GLDA delivers powerful chelation across a wide pH range, forming stable water-soluble complexes with metal ions. Its chelation capacity is impressive: 45 mg Ca²⁺/g, 72 mg Cu²⁺/g, and 75 mg Zn²⁺/g. This performance enables GLDA to effectively remove heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) from waters and industrial wastewaters. In water treatment, GLDA has demonstrated particular effectiveness for lead removal, with strong potential for purification of heavy-metal-contaminated water sources.

Beyond water treatment, GLDA is a drop-in replacement for traditional chelating agents in high polymer chemistry, household chemicals, pulp and paper production, pharmaceuticals, aquaculture, textile dyeing and printing, oilfield applications, and boiler cleaning. It achieves synergistic effects when combined with biocides and is available as amber transparent liquid (38% and 47% active) or white powder (85% active).

Shandong Kairui Chemistry Co., Ltd. supplies GLDA.Na4 (CAS 51981-21-6) as part of its green chelating agent portfolio. With 280,000 tons of annual production capacity and five dedicated workshops, Kairui delivers reliable supply and technical support for formulators worldwide.
