Tolyltriazole (TTA) is an organic compound belonging to the benzotriazole family, primarily valued for its role as a highly effective corrosion inhibitor, particularly for copper and its alloys.

Physical Properties
Melting Point: Melts within the range of 76-87°C. It is a mixture of 4- and 5-methyl-benzotriazole isomers, with the pure substance melting between 80-86°C.

Boiling Point: Reported at 160°C.

Solubility: It is barely soluble in water (<0.01 g/100 mL). However, it is soluble in organic solvents like alcohol, benzene, toluene, and chloroform, and can also dissolve in dilute alkaline solutions.

Density: Approximately 1.24 at 20°C.

Vapor Pressure: 14.3 Pa at 25°C.

Acidity (pKa): 8.85 at 20°C.

Stability & Reactivity
Chemical Stability: TTA is generally considered stable.

Incompatibilities: It is incompatible with h3 oxidizing agents. It may also react with acids, isocyanates, and halogenated organics.

Thermal Stability: It exhibits outstanding thermal and oxidative stability, with a thermal decomposition temperature of ≥200°C.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Under fire conditions or upon decomposition, it may produce toxic fumes, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Safety & Handling
TTA is classified with certain hazards:

Toxicity: Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin. The oral LD50 for rats is 675 mg/kg.

Irritation: Irritating to eyes, respiratory system, and skin.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials and ignition sources.
