Sodium Polyacrylate (PAAS) is a versatile polymer used in textile dyeing primarily as a processing aid rather than a dye itself. Its applications in this field can be categorized into four main areas: improving dye dispersion, serving as an eco-friendly alternative to inorganic salts, acting as an anti-fouling agent in soaping, and modifying fibers to enhance their dyeability.

Here is a breakdown of its specific applications:

Application Area Function & Benefits Context/Examples
Dye Dispersion & Uniformity Acts as a highly effective sizing agent and dispersant, forming a uniform film on fabric. Used to create stable color pastes for pad dyeing with insoluble natural dyes like curcumin, ensuring even color distribution on wool fabrics .
Electrolyte Substitute Serves as an eco-friendly replacement for traditional inorganic salts (e.g., Glauber’s salt, sodium carbonate). In one-bath dyeing of polyester/cotton blends with reactive dyes, PAAS acts as a pH buffer and dyeing promoter, achieving comparable color depth with better uniformity and improved biodegradability.
Anti-fouling in Soaping Used for its strong chelating ability with metal ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) and anti-redeposition properties. When combined with other copolymers, PAAS can be part of a soap solution that efficiently removes unfixed dyes and prevents them from re-depositing on the fabric, improving color fastness.
Fiber Modification Added to the polymer matrix to change fiber structure and chemical properties. In producing polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fibers, PAAS creates a “macromolecular space network” that makes the fiber more hygroscopic and much easier to dye, achieving a dyeing rate of up to 93%.
General Usage & Key Parameters
Recommended Dosage: The optimal concentration of PAAS varies significantly by application. For example, it is used at 7.5 g/L for natural dye dispersion, at 50-60 g/L as an electrolyte substitute in one-bath dyeing, and as a scale inhibitor in ancillary water treatment at a much lower concentration (2-15 mg/L).

Key Advantages: PAAS is considered non-toxic and water-soluble. In some applications, it offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemicals, as its polymeric nature can lead to better biodegradability.

Safety: As with any industrial chemical, avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
