Its effectiveness is rooted in its molecular structure, which combines carboxylic acid groups (for scale inhibition and dispersion) with highly polar sulfonic acid groups. This unique combination results in high calcium tolerance and exceptional performance against various scales such as calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, and zinc scale, as well as preventing iron oxide deposition.

Industrial Water Treatment
AA/AMPS is widely used as a scale inhibitor and dispersant in various water treatment systems.

Specific Systems: It is commonly applied in open circulating cooling water systems, oilfield refill water systems, metallurgical system circulating water, and steel mill cooling water to prevent Fe₂O₃ sludge deposition.

Harsh Conditions: It is particularly suitable for water with high pH, high alkalinity, and high hardness, making it an ideal agent for achieving high concentration ratios in cooling water.

Synergistic Use: It can be used in combination with organophosphonates and zinc salts, where it shows a significant synergistic effect, enhancing overall corrosion and scale inhibition performance. This synergistic effect ensures sufficient organophosphonate levels remain in the water system.

Membrane Systems: Patents also describe its use as a method for inhibiting scale formation and deposition in membrane systems.
